Humanitas Research Hospital

Humanitas is a highly-specialised hospital, research and teaching center, which hosts Humanitas University, an academic institute dedicated to medical sciences. Built around centres for the prevention and treatment of cancer, cardiovascular, neurological, autoimmune, inflammatory, and orthopaedic diseases – together with an Ophthalmic Center and a Fertility Center – Humanitas also operates a highly specialised Emergency Department and the Emergency Hospital 19, dedicated to the treatment of infectious diseases.

Humanitas is considered one of the most technologically advanced hospitals in Europe for:

Diagnosis (imaging and lab tests)

  • MR – Tesla Magnetic Resonance, including open
  • MR and the 3 Tesla MRI which provides higher resolution images in a few seconds (that can be acquired during respiratory apnoea), minimising the patient’s permanence into the medical machinery.
  • CT, including 512 slices, 128 slices, ER CT, RTE CT and EH19 CT, and intraoperative CT
  • Cyclotron PET-CT
  • Biplane angiography
  • EOS, a newly-designed imaging system that permits the study of the spine and lower limbs in standing position (under loaded condition).
  • 3D Ultrasound Scan
  • Genetic diagnosis instruments and molecular tests
  • Breast Tomosynthesis (3D mammography)

Procedures

  • Stereotaxis for cardiac arrhythmia treatment
  • Excimer and femtosecond laser
  • Edge and Gamma Knife for brain Radiosurgery, often an alternative to the traditional surgery, are known for exceptional dose conformity and precision, limiting radiation to the surrounding brain tissue and critical structures.
  • Da Vinci robotic system represents the state of the art for surgery, thanks to highdefinition and three-dimensional imagery, along with four robotic arms.
  • TrueBeam and TrueBeam STX are linear accelerators that adapt to the movement of internal organs due to breathing and deliver the
highest possible radiation dose to the targeted cancer tissue with millimetre precision, thus sparing healthy surrounding tissue.

Scientific and research activities Humanitas’ scientific activity has been constantly increasing in the quality and number of published
scientific papers, achieving very high levels, as indicated by bibliometric indexes which rank Humanitas among the first hospitals in scientific research, particularly in the immune system. The latter is crucial for contemporary research in Medicine because of its strong influence on different clinical areas, from cancer to cardiovascular diseases, to inflammatory and autoimmune diseases.
Moreover, Humanitas AI Center helps to provide innovative diagnostic tools and treatments and to lead the research by means of big data analysis, Machine Learning, and the complementary expertise.

  • Cancer Center
  • Neuro Center
  • Ortho Center

Cardio Center

Humanitas Cardio Center is formed by highly specialised cardiologists and cardiac surgeons using cutting-edge cardiac surgical techniques (i.e. artificial hearts, transapical valves) and cardiac robotic surgery for any heart disease. Humanitas Cardio Center is also a Heart Failure Therapy Centre, a Thrombosis Center and a Electrophysiology Center which uses the latest-generation robot for the treatment of arrhythmias (Stereotaxis). Humanitas Cardio Center is also specialised in after surgery rehabilitation.

Neuro Center

Humanitas Neuro Center is formed by a multidisciplinary Oncological Neurosurgery team which is specialised in diagnosing and treating
complex brain tumours, brain and spine diseases, using the latest techniques and technologies such as awake surgery (Functional neurosurgery) and radiosurgery performed by the EDGE accelerator or Gamma Knife. Humanitas Neuro Center is also specialised in after surgery rehabilitation.

Cancer Center

Humanitas Cancer Center is formed by a multidisciplinary Oncological team which is specialised in diagnosing and treating all types of
tumours, also rare cancers, and metastatic pathologies using the very latest surgical and non-surgical procedures and treatments performed by highly experienced professionals in multidisciplinary diagnosis and treatment in oncology, and translational and basic clinical research.

Emergency Hospital 19

It is an innovative structure built in the Humanitas Hospital’s site, that was designed to respond to current and future health emergencies associated with infectious diseases. The Emergency Hospital 19’s activity is combined with the immunological research programme against infectious diseases.

Immuno Center

Humanitas Immuno Center is involved in the diagnosis, management and treatment of rheumatic diseases; asthma and allergies, dermatology and chronic intestinal inflammatory diseases. In Humanitas Immuno Center there is a close link between research and
clinical activity that allows the testing of new markers to diagnose and monitor the disease, so that patients can more easily access new therapies, such as biologic therapies, cross-cutting different diseases.

Ortho Center

Humanitas Ortho Center is formed by orthopaedic surgical teams focused and specialised in shoulder, elbow, hand, hip, knee, foot minimally invasive surgery, in minimally invasive prosthetic surgery also performed by navigating and robotic systems, traumatology and
paediatric orthopaedics. Humanitas Ortho Center is also specialised in after surgery rehabilitation.

Ophtalmic Center

Humanitas Ophthalmic Center is formed by a specialised professional team in diagnosing and treating cataracts, glaucoma, congenital-infantile and paralytic strabismus using the ultrasound phacoemulsification technique and artificial lens implantation; retinal pathologies (detachments, vitrectomies), corneal transplantation, stem cells, amniotic membrane, laser refractive surgery, digitised retinal fluoroangiography, computerised campimetry, ocular ultrasound, corneal topography, and visual evoked potentials.

Fertility Center

Humanitas Fertility Center is one of the most important points of reference for treating infertility, with high-tech procedures for intrauterine
insemination (first level PMA pathway), ovulation induction and monitoring, oocyte retrieval, in vitro fertilisation (IVF), intracytoplasmic gamete injection (ICSI), embryo transfer, cryopreservation of oocytes for precautionary purposes and cryopreservation of gametes and embryos.
