Istituto Giannina Gaslini
The Giannina Gaslini Institute, in Genoa, is Italy’s leading paediatric IRCCS: a hospital, research and teaching centre dedicated to children and adolescents. Founded in 1938, it provides the full spectrum of paediatric care and also manages pregnancies, especially those complicated by fetal conditions. Internationally recognised and JCI-accredited, it treats patients from Italy and abroad.
Surgical Sciences: Comprehensive Paediatric Surgery from Birth
Gaslini’s Department of Surgical Sciences encompasses paediatric general surgery, cardiac surgery, thoracic and airway surgery, orthopaedics, hand surgery, plastic surgery, urology, neurosurgery, ENT, ophthalmology and more, covering patients from newborn to adolescence. Complex malformations identified prenatally are managed immediately at birth through a seamless birth pathway. Our surgeons perform open, minimally invasive and robotic-assisted procedures. Cardiology and cardiac surgery manage the full spectrum of heart defects, including neonatal emergencies, and also cares for GUCH patients. All surgical disciplines are supported by dedicated paediatric anaesthesia, intensive care and post-operative monitoring, ensuring continuity and safety at every stage of treatment.
Paediatric Medicine: Specialised Care Across All Clinical Areas
The Department of Paediatric Sciences brings together nephrology, gastroenterology, rheumatology, immunology, neurology, pneumology, infectious diseases, endocrinology, clinical genetics and more. Gaslini is Italy’s national reference centre for paediatric rheumatology and hosts the Regional Rare Disease Centre for Liguria. Genetic diagnostics, advanced imaging and specialist laboratory services — including molecular genetics — support diagnosis across all subspecialties. The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and birth pathway provide expert management of high-risk newborns and foetal malformations from prenatal diagnosis through postnatal care, with around-the-clock neonatology and specialist support.
Onco-Haematology: Advanced Therapies for Childhood Cancers
Gaslini’s Onco-Haematology Department is one of Italy’s highest-volume paediatric oncology centres, treating solid tumours, brain tumours, leukaemia and lymphoma. Available treatments include conventional chemotherapy, bone marrow and stem cell transplantation, and CAR-T cell therapy; radiotherapy, nuclear medicine and PET-CT are provided through collaboration with reference metropolitan hospitals. Diagnosis is supported by the Diagnostic Services Department – radiology, molecular pathology, specialist genetics laboratories and more – ensuring rapid and accurate workup. Active participation in national and European clinical trials gives patients access to innovative protocols. A multidisciplinary team integrating oncology, surgery, radiology, pathology and psycho-oncology ensures a holistic, family-centred approach to care.
