Centers of Excellence
Diabetes, Obesity, and Metabolism Department
The Diabetes, Obesity, and Metabolism Department is a flagship of Gruppo MultiMedica, adopting an integrated and multidisciplinary approach to effectively manage complex conditions. The department prioritizes patient needs at every stage, from early diagnosis to the management of severe complications.
The Diabetes Unit, led by Dr. Cesare Berra, annually treats thousands of patients with diabetes mellitus and other metabolic disorders, utilizing cutting-edge technologies such as continuous glucose monitoring and insulin pumps. Collaboration with endocrinologists, nephrologists, and surgeons enables the prevention and management of diabetes-related vascular and neuropathic complications.
Obesity management is another area of excellence within the department. Ambulatory care, coordinated by Prof. Caterina Conte, involves highly structured clinical pathways combining nutritional, psychological, and medical interventions to promote weight loss and overall health improvement. For more complex cases, bariatric surgery provides a transformative solution. Procedures, including gastric bypass and sleeve gastrectomy, are performed at the IRCCS in Sesto San Giovanni under Dr. Domenico Labonia and at San Giuseppe Hospital under Dr. Andrea Porta.
The Diabetic Foot Care Center, directed by Dr. Enrico Brocco, is a regional leader in managing diabetic complications, treating over 1,200 cases annually. The multidisciplinary team addresses complex ulcers, prevents amputations, and enhances patients’ quality of life.
Cardiovascular Care
Since 2006, the IRCCS MultiMedica in Sesto San Giovanni has been recognized by the Ministry of Health for research and treatment in cardiovascular diseases. This area is a cornerstone of the Group’s activities, integrating advanced diagnostics, high-level surgical interventions, and comprehensive cardiac rehabilitation programs. The department handles over 25,000 patients annually, specializing in conditions such as heart failure, valvular disease, and congenital heart defects.
Under the leadership of Prof. Riccardo Cappato, the electrophysiology unit stands out for its expertise in diagnosing and treating arrhythmias. Innovative techniques, including catheter ablation and cutting-edge pacemaker and defibrillator technologies, deliver excellent outcomes even in the most complex cases.
The Group’s commitment extends to cardiac rehabilitation, with tailored programs supporting both chronic patients and those recovering from surgery.
Hand Surgery and Rehabilitation
The Hand Surgery Unit, led by Dr. Giorgio Pajardi, is a recognized leader in Europe for its size and expertise. Specializing in a wide range of conditions, from traumatic injuries to congenital malformations, the unit exemplifies clinical excellence.
Each year, over 8,000 surgeries are performed, including more than 600 procedures for pediatric congenital hand deformities. The unit’s close collaboration with the rehabilitation department ensures optimal recovery through customized protocols that combine physical therapy and psychological support, promoting full functional restoration.
