AMNESTIA: DIGITAL TECHNOLOGIES FOR A NEW APPROACH TO DEMENTIA CARE
Fondazione Mondino IRCCS has launched the “Amnestia” project, aimed at transforming dementia care by integrating multiple digital technologies into patient support. Drawing on pioneering initiatives like e‑MemoryCare—one of Italy’s largest neurocognitive stimulation platforms—the project offers remote, app-based cognitive training tailored to people experiencing memory decline.
Key elements of Amnestia include:
-
A suite of web and mobile apps designed to train memory, orientation, behavior, and social interaction—activities proven to slow cognitive decline and empower both patients and caregivers.
-
Use of artificial intelligence and predictive digital phenotyping, creating digital profiles that enable early detection and personalized interventions.
-
Integration of virtual and augmented reality tools to offer safe, immersive environments for cognitive stimulation and emotional support.
-
A remote rehabilitation model, where therapists guide patients via tablet or smartphone—continuing cognitive care from the comfort of home.
These strategies are supported by data from meta-analyses and observational studies showing that regular digital engagement—through smartphones, computers, and apps—can reduce cognitive decline risk by approximately 42–58 %. This is believed to stem from a protective “technological reserve” that activates memory, planning, and problem-solving functions.
Why this matters for medical tourists:
-
Home-based support allows continuity of care without requiring frequent hospital visits
-
Personalized programmes adapt to each individual’s abilities and daily needs
-
Early detection & prevention approach offers meaningful cognitive benefits
-
Holistic support for caregivers reduces stress and enhances daily quality of life
Amnestia positions Fondazione Mondino as a pioneer in digitally enabled dementia care. For international patients and families considering medical travel, this innovative model marries cutting-edge technology with compassionate, evidence-based support—tailored to strengthen cognition and improve daily living.

For patients coming from abroad, the Fondazione Mondino’s International Department organises an all inclusive service, making travel arrangements for patients and their companions, to ensure that their journey is safe and comfortable, and also managing the pre-treatment and the after-care processes. All this is possible thanks to a network of contacts in the various countries of origin and the availability of telemedicine facilities.
