FONDAZIONE MONDINO AND UNIVERSITY OF PAVIA JOIN FORCES TO LAUNCH MEDICAL INFORMATICS & AI UNIT
Fondazione Mondino IRCCS and the University of Pavia have officially launched a joint Medical Informatics and Artificial Intelligence Unit, a strategic move that positions Pavia at the forefront of the transition toward the “smart hospital” model. This new structure expands on the existing work of Mondino’s Digital Neurosciences, Advanced Imaging, and AI teams, creating a centralized innovation core.
The new unit is deeply interdisciplinary, bringing together neurologists, computer scientists, biomedical engineers, statisticians, and clinical researchers. Its mission is to harness machine learning, radiomics, and computational modelling to unlock new possibilities in the diagnosis and treatment of neurological disorders.
Key objectives include:
-
Developing multiscale brain digital twins to simulate disease evolution
-
Applying AI-driven analyses to clinical and imaging data for more precise care
-
Enhancing diagnostic pathways through predictive algorithms tailored to individual patients
The unit is part of a wider regional initiative involving major institutions in Pavia—including IRCCS San Matteo and IRCCS Maugeri—under the coordination of a newly formed biomedical AI working group. This group aims to turn the area’s rich scientific ecosystem into a catalyst for health data innovation, enabling smarter, faster, and more effective care.
A major milestone will be the match-making meeting on June 27, 2025, scheduled during the AIME 2025 Conference on AI in Medicine. The session will connect researchers, clinicians, and tech experts to launch collaborative projects with direct hospital applications.
Why this matters for medical tourists:
-
Technology-enhanced care: Patients benefit from AI-powered diagnostics and treatment planning
-
Personalized medicine: Digital twins and predictive models tailor care to individual needs
-
Research-based innovation: Cutting-edge treatments emerge from real-time collaboration
-
Academic-medical synergy: Excellence driven by partnerships between leading hospitals and universities

For patients coming from abroad, the Fondazione Mondino’s International Department organises an all inclusive service, making travel arrangements for patients and their companions, to ensure that their journey is safe and comfortable, and also managing the pre-treatment and the after-care processes. All this is possible thanks to a network of contacts in the various countries of origin and the availability of telemedicine facilities.
