RESEARCH AND MANAGMENT: THE DUAL CHALLENGE OF NEUROSCIENCE AT MONDINO IN PAVIA
“Mondino is home to prominent scientific figures and internationally active research teams. It has a long-standing tradition of combining basic, clinical, and translational research with patient care and centrality,” Nicotera stated. “The future strategy? To advance both research and management, sharing data and uniting teams in collaboration with other IRCCS research hospitals focused on neuroscience. We will strengthen partnerships through Swarm Learning, an AI solution that allows data and analysis sharing while preserving privacy.” Research and management, two sides of the same coin, aim to drive international development.
Pierluigi Nicotera, currently the Scientific Director and Executive Board Chair of the DZNE in Bonn, was born in 1956 and graduated from the University of Pavia. He earned his Ph.D. at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, where he later served as an associate professor. From 1995 to 2000, he directed the Molecular Toxicology Division at the University of Konstanz. After a subsequent stint in England, he took on leadership of the German center, which now employs around 1,200 people across ten sites, with Bonn being the largest. In November 2017, Nicotera was awarded the Ottorino Rossi Prize by the Mondino Institute.
In basic research, Nicotera has focused for years on mechanisms underlying neuronal death, mitochondrial function, and aging. On the management front, he established an institute at the University of Konstanz, directed the Medical Research Council Toxicology Unit, and served as Honorary Professor of Neuroscience at the University of Leicester. His tenure in Germany began in 2009.
“Medicine,” Nicotera explains, “is moving towards personalized care: a therapy suitable for one individual is not automatically effective for another. Scientifically, Italy is well-positioned, producing high-quality research. The issue lies in scale and funding. We need to develop models of excellence to attract more funding, both from current research activities and other sources like European grants and industry collaborations. This could be the path for Mondino.”
Gianni Bonelli, General Director of the Mondino Institute, believes that with Nicotera’s leadership, it will be possible to “expand research horizons, particularly internationally, continuing the work accomplished so far thanks to the invaluable contribution of the current Scientific Director, Dr. Roberto Bergamaschi, and everyone who has contributed to Mondino’s current standing.”
According to Francesco Svelto, President of the Mondino Institute and Rector of the University of Pavia, Pierluigi Nicotera “is one of the world’s leading experts on the neuronal death mechanisms underlying neurodegenerative diseases. After leading the Toxicology Unit at the British Medical Research Council, he became Scientific Director of the DZNE in 2009, one of the world’s foremost centers for neurodegenerative disease research. His work at the DZNE, which he founded, has created a globally emulated model, identifying the most promising research lines on neuronal connectivity mechanisms and creating an organizational model that integrates experimental, clinical, and translational aspects. We are proud and delighted to welcome Pierluigi Nicotera to the Mondino family, confident that his ideas and experience will enable us to make significant progress.”

For patients coming from abroad, the Fondazione Mondino’s International Department organises an all inclusive service, making travel arrangements for patients and their companions, to ensure that their journey is safe and comfortable, and also managing the pre-treatment and the after-care processes. All this is possible thanks to a network of contacts in the various countries of origin and the availability of telemedicine facilities.
